Together We Can!

together-we-can.jpgRemember that I posted a while back that I am serving on the Saturday in the Park committee?  This is our City’s annual celebration for Independence Day and it occurs the weekend prior to July 4th, so this year it is June 27 and June 28th.   Anyway, we have starting meeting and planning and I have to tell you I am SO EXCITED!  I guarantee you this promises to be a bigger and better event than ever before.  We have some great people on the committee with some GREAT ideas.  I can hardly wait until the 27th.  SO MUCH to do before then.

One thing that we are doing is we have selected a theme for this year’s event–”TOGETHER WE CAN!”.  I just LOVE it!  It says SO much!  We have such an outstanding community in Scranton and our youth are just so AWESOME!    I think this theme just speaks volumes to togetherness, community, unity, cooperation, success and MORE!

Any way, to promote our theme, we are sponsoring a logo contest at the local school, Scranton Attendance Center.  The students are being asked to design a logo for our theme and we will use the logo in our advertising and in promoting our theme and event.  The winning student will receive a $50.00 saving bond which has been donated by the Kansas State Bank.

Be sure to mark this event on your calendar, you really won’t want to miss.  Check our blog often for more updates!

Earth Day Tip #13-Turn the water temp down

earth-day-tip-13.jpgDid you know that for every 10 degrees that you turn your hot water heater down that you can shave 3-5% off your water heating energy costs!  There are many recommendations for water heater settings, I have seen some at low as 115 degrees.  Beware though, I have also read that turning your hot water down too low can result in the growth of bacteria inside your hot water heater!  NASTY!  So, after reading many different recommendations, it appears to me (this is my opinion only) that the heater itself should be set at 130 degrees to prevent the growth of NASTY stuff inside your hot water heater.  This allows for delivery of water at the tap of about 120 degrees (remember that the water is probably cooling as it travels your pipes) and this is a safe temp at the tap.   Ours is set at 140 degrees and we turned it down to 130 degrees.   We should start seeing a savings in our utility bills.   Can’t wait.

And you shouldn’t wait to check out Rumors HAS IT! resale shop in Scranton, KS for great deals to help stretch your budget!

Earth Day Tip #10–Ceiling Fans

earth-day-tip-10.jpgCeiling Fans help save energy in your home. A ceiling fan helps circulate air and makes you feel cooler which enables you to use your air conditioner less and keep it set at a higher temperature when you are using it. According to this site a ceiling fan cost about $.18 per 24 hour period to operate versus $2.91 per 24 hour period for a window air conditioner (this is based on an electrical cost of $.1012 per KWH) To get the best ceiling fan for energy savings, look for a product approved by Energy Star. Energy Star approved ceiling fans have more energy efficient motors and blades to help maximize your cooling power.

Earth Day Tip #4–Non-toxic Pest Control

earth-day-4.jpgToxic chemicals used in pesticides can be dangerous to children, pets and the environment. Try these home-made pest control methods.

  • Ants: squeeze a lemon at their point of entry and leave the peel.
  • Ants: Ants hate cucumbers, especially the peels. Spread cucumber peels at the ants point of entry–the more bitter, the better.
  • Flies: Flypaper is non-toxic; however, you can make your own with honey and yellow paper.
  • Don’t kill the spiders unless you are plagued with them–they eat other pests.
  • Barriers around your home will act like barbed wire to keep creep crawly pests such as ants out of your home. Plants such as spearmint, peppermint, and pennyroyal planted around the exterior of your home will look nice, but also deter pests such as ants from entering your home.
  • Another barrier–grind garlic up with water and apply around your home. Other barriers: cayenne pepper, bone meal, chalk, cinnamon, powdered charcoal or talcum powder. Some substances work better than others, so you’ll you have to test the different substances to find the ones that work best for your pests.

FireworksFireworksI don’t know about all of you but I am sooo ready for spring and summer. I am tired of being cold. I haven’t actually counted but someone told me that it has snowed 11 times this season. Enough is enough! Anyway, we all have something to look forward to–I was at our City Council meeting last night and plans are beginning for our annual “Saturday in the Park” event. I was appointed to the committee to help with the planning of the event. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Others on the committee are Pastor Don Herren, Randy Jackson, Eddie Lester, and Gary DeShazer. I can’t wait to start planning–I am so ready for the nicer weather. I don’t know what all will be on the agenda for this year but in the past there have been great food, great music, crafts, a 4th of July parade, Fireworks display, carnival rides for the kids, a lawn tractor pull, volleyball tournament and so much more. I am sure I am not remembering everything–but I do know it is a GREAT EVENT! Mark it on your calendar-Saturday, June 28, 2008. DON’T MISS IT!!!
